David Evans (1793-1861)
Stained glass artist born at Llanllwchaiarn near Newtown. He was apprenticed to Sir John Betton of Shrewsbury (1765-1849) in 1808, and went into partnership with him from 1815 as Betton & Evans Evans retained the name of the firm following the retirement of Betton in 1825. Examples of Evans' windows in Wales may be found at Penrhyn Castle, Bangor Cathedral and Christ Church, Welshpool. Although work by him at many cathedrals has been replaced, there are several churches in Shrewsbury that boast major works, including the Church of St Julian, where he was churchwarden. His sons Charles and William continued to make stained glass as Evans Brothers.
